"...And I would like to thank, 'Function of Beauty', for sponsoring this weeks video"
Function of Beauty is a New York based company that creates custom shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments and hair masks. The companies biggest selling point to customer is that each formula is specially made for each customer. So much so, that each bottle can be labeled according to you - function of *your name here*. The company also uses all natural products, is paraben and sulphate free - meaning no chemicals. The products are also cruelty free and vegan.
Now as a buddying life-style influencer, or wannabe beauty influencer, I've been bombarded with so many Instagram, Facebook and sponsored YouTube videos so naturally I had to try it for myself.
As a "budding" influencer, the cost of the product is way over my shampoo budget so I had to wait for the appropriate time to try the product.
A 16oz bottle of shampoo (which is around 470ml) costs $59AUD but if you buy the 16oz shampoo and conditioner set it'll set you back $79AUD, plus $5AUD if you don't sign up for a shipping frequency plan.
The way it works:
You start by taking a short hair quiz in which you describe your hair and choose 5 'hair goals'. As someone who's biggest hair goal was to grow my hair out fast I chose that option first. My formula - deep condition, hydrate, lengthen, oil control and strengthen - was ready to go. The last thing to website asks you to do is name your product, then choose a colour and fragrance.
As the company is US based, the products took about two weeks to arrive on my door step. The first thing I noticed is bottle looks smaller than the ones I had seen on YouTube brand promoted videos. But I have to admit the aesthetic of the product overshadowed my initial thought. The product came in a beautiful little box with my "function of nana" label on the front.
Now lets get to the real functionality of "function of beauty". After the first couple washes I noticed a difference in my hair length, its started to look longer, but I also wanted to convince myself that my hair was growing.
But after doing a little measuring I found that my hair has actually grown about 2cm after using the product for two weeks. (If you'd like to see weekly check-ins let us know in the comments!)
The fragrance I chose, milk(shea)ke, is really beautiful and potent when I'm washing my hair but after my hair dries I cant really smell the scent anymore which could be a good thing or a bad thing. Overall my hair does seem like its healthier then when I was just using a grocer bought shampoo.
Negative thoughts??
My only negative thoughts on the product are the issue with the scent. I found with my grocery bought coconut scented shampoo the smell would last in my hair for a couple of days and with Function of Beauty the scent only lasts a day or less.
And the other negative I have about the product is the price. Eighty dollars for a smaller sized shampoo and conditioner set it quite a fair amount. Though, I do use my shampoo and conditioner less because my hair stays cleaner for longer - I still believe its a whole lot of money for something that doesn't really look like its making the biggest of differences in my hair.
The aesthetic purposed of the product did really pull me to click "add to cart", but for a student on a budget - I'm not sure if this product really is a good investment. If you're really passionate about your hair health and want to start using natural products - definitely have a look into Function of Beauty. But if you're more concerned about what works on your hair and is affordable - maybe give this product a miss.
