Cleaning and Organising Your Room

We know that desire to want to clean your room but not knowing how to start or even what to do.

Maybe you don't even want to clean your room but you sort of have to, being 'adult' and all.

On top of that, not only do you need to clean it but ORGANISE it so you actually have a productive work space!

We're here to help! As students ourselves we understand the pressures and strain a messy room can give you. Here is our guide to clean and organise your room!

Roll up those sleeves and let's get started!

START:

  • Chuck out all rubbish (inside bin, on surfaces, on ground... all trash)

  • Pick up the clothes on the ground: even if dirty clothes are put in a basket and clean clothes are on the bed, just get them off the ground and separate them!

STEP ONE:

  • Clean the floor! Collect all your items on the floor and place them on your bed, sort through the dirty and clean clothing

The floor should have nothing on it if does it shouldn’t be there

  • All of the clothes YOU own must have a designated area for you to come back to.

If you find you’re running out of space to store things - you NEED to purchase some storage space, Kmart is an easy and cheap option for this

STEP TWO:

  • Put the second layer away

The “second layer” is your layer above the ground which is your surfaces.
  • Desk, bookshelves, drawers, side tables etc. You must put these away properly so there is minimal objects on top of the surfaces.

STEP THREE:

Notice you don’t know where something goes? This probably means it’s junk so...

THROW IT AWAY

Clean out the junk you don’t need, you’ll know what this is because you can’t find a space for it; which means it’s probably not significant enough

This is the emptying phase.

An exception to the emptying phase would be to create a new spot. Limit this to only 3 or 4 new spots, you don’t want to just reassign a spot for all your junk, this wouldn’t be cleaning your room.

  • In this stage think about getting rid of clothing that you don't wear anymore either and make a pile of clothes you don't want.

Do not do this if it causes the second layer surfaces to be cluttered!

STEP FOUR:

Organise!

This should be fun! Re-create your system to see what fits best and what is most convenient that is NOT messy.

  • Use up that storage space and DO NOT fill it with junk!: Place books/journals vertically for best storage (if it fits that way), and wrap up cords around an object (e.g. a bullet clip, a stick, a ruler etc.)

  • Now... put away these clothes nicely!! Take out your wardrobe and create a fitting system. Even label your places with blue tack and paper so you know where they go and FOLD THEM NICELY (see Marie Kondo for more tips)

HELPFUL TIPS:

  1. Organise your wardrobe in sections eg. dresses, t-shirts etc.

  2. Store the current seasons clothing inside wardrobe to maximise storage (store non seasonal clothing such as winter or summer items into boxes)

  3. Use Maria Kondo's folding method to maximise drawer space:

FINALLY:

  • Dust, wipe and scrub your surfaces. Pick up stuff and clean beneath it.

  • And now vacuum and you’re done!!

Enjoy the cleanliness of your room and notice how relaxed and de-cluttered your mind feels!

We hope that our guide has helped with your quest to clean and organise your room!
